Tips for a TV mount in the motorhome / caravan
A holiday with a motorhome or caravan stands for freedom, but also for living in a small space. Everything has to have its place and be well stowed away. Even the TV is finding its way into the caravan more and more often, because the camper doesn't want to and doesn't have to do without anything! In the following guide, you will find tips on how to mount a monitor in your motorhome or caravan. Or are you thinking about using your tablet, which you may have with you on your travels anyway, as a TV? That is also possible!
Preliminary considerations for a television / TV or tablet holder
In order for a monitor holder to provide more TV comfort in your motorhome or caravan, you need to find the right place to mount it. The following questions need to be answered, whereby the last two are the most important:
- From where do you want to watch TV (driver's seat, sitting area, bed, ...)?
Watching television stands for relaxation and distraction. But relaxation is gone if the viewing angle to the TV set is not suitable. Who wants to constantly contort their head or sit uncomfortably or in an uncomfortable position to watch the film or the news. If you're going to watch TV in your motorhome, then do it properly.
Most of the time, the seating area is used for watching TV. The driver's seat and the passenger seat are then converted into cosy TV armchairs and the film can begin. However, a television option in bed is often desired, i.e. the bracket is mounted in the sleeping compartment of the caravan. In some cases, both places are possible thanks to a swivel arm.
Determine your feel-good place or places to watch TV! - What comfort or functions should the mount have?
This is where monitor mounts come into play, which enable a comfortable TV experience in the caravan or motor home. For a monitor mount in a car / caravan, at least three criteria must be considered: the mounting location, the viewing angle and a transport lock. Many wall mounts have been specially designed for mounting / installation in motor homes. The mounts score points by fixing the TV while driving (transport lock) as well as with pull-out functions, folding functions or swivel mechanisms for an ideal viewing angle.
The range of monitor mounts is diverse. The product range extends from simple, largely rigid / fixed wall mounts, to tiltable, swivelling and fold-out mounts, to electric monitor mounts. A mount with a fold-out swivel arm creates more room for manoeuvre and, if necessary, allows different viewing positions - from the bed, the sitting area or the driver's seat. With rotatable and swivelling TV mounts, you have a good view of the TV set from almost any position in your motorhome or caravan.
Novus and MonLines offer a wide range of mounts for the motorhome. In addition to monitor mounts, tablet mounts are also possible! - Where do the pre-routed antenna cables end and where are the sockets?
Tip: Usually the SAT cable can be found in the wardrobe or in/on boards near the seating area.
Sockets can be retrofitted. If a new connection is required in the motorhome, the products from Bachmann are ideal. The balanced geometry of the POWER FRAME articles fits elegantly into the furniture surface, for example. The frames can be equipped as desired with custom modules. For example, USB ports are possible in addition to the normal sockets, because fast charging of smartphones and tablets is also an enormous relief in mobile homes or caravans.
The installation of new sockets should only be carried out by a specialist! Ask at your workshop. Where is there a sufficiently stable and accessible mounting option for the bracket including the TV set?
- Mounting in cabinets / sideboards
Often the monitor mount including the TV set is fixed in cabinets or sideboards in which the TV set disappears and is secured when not in use (sometimes even electrically). Two aspects need to be checked: Does the TV fit into the cabinet or board and does the piece of furniture have a stable wall to which the wall mount can be easily attached.
In some newer vehicle models, the manufacturer has already fitted a reinforcing plate in the cabinet, for example, to which a wall bracket can be securely attached. You or a specialist workshop should check this on your vehicle. If there is no reinforcement, retrofitting is essential. Experts recommend glued-in plywood boards with a thickness of 15 mm and an edge length of at least 25 cm to fix the monitor bracket properly.
If you have lightweight furniture with a polystyrene core or honeycomb structure, it is imperative to use suitable spacers so that the screw connection does not simply pull the wall together.
If you are unsure, consult your specialist workshop! - Mounting on the interior walls or on the ceiling
In most cases, the TV on the ceiling is the least disturbing, especially if it simply folds in when not in use and the TV is then parallel to the ceiling.
In most cases, however, mounting a ceiling mount is not advisable for stability and safety reasons - just as mounting directly on the inside wall of a caravan is not. The only exception is if the manufacturer has provided a suitable mounting location and incorporated a reinforcement. Ask the caravan/motor home manufacturer or a specialist workshop.
